Hankenalumn - är du intresserad av att hjälpa en studerande i form av att agera som dennes mentor? Hanken söker nu flera mentorer till programmet som startar i september! Oscar Storsjö har deltagit i mentorskapsprogrammet både som adept och mentor. Han skulle även gärna agera mentor igen och kommenterar följande: ”Jag tycker det har varit en mycket positiv upplevelse och väldigt nyttigt, och jag kan varmt rekommendera det för andra också. Jag tror att det är bra att det finns mentorer med olika profiler och erfarenheter i programmet, så att man kan matcha adepterna med en passande mentor.”

Are you interested in helping a student out in the shape of acting as his/her mentor? Hanken is looking for more alumni mentors for the programme Helsinki, which starts in September! Oscar Storsjö has participated in the Hanken Mentorship Programme as both mentee and mentor and says he would like to act as mentor again. “I think that is has been a very positive experience and I can warmly recommend it to others too. I think that it is good that there are mentors with different profiles and experiences in the programme, so that it is possible to match the mentors and mentees successfully.”

Did you know that Hanken and the student union coo

Did you know that Hanken and the student union cooperate on many projects? 🧘🏽‍♂️ Approximately once a month the student union's board, the student association in Vaasa, and important key members of staff sit down together for a Rector's coffee to chat about current affairs. Some of the discussions lead to new long term initiatives (such as the study area Skogen 🏕️), whereas others enable low threshold contact between Hanken and our students.

Besides organizing events for its members, the student union's tasks are, as stated in the Universities Act (558/2009): "The student union liaises with and on behalf of its members and promotes their societal, social and intellectual aspirations and those relating to studies and the status of students in society. The student union also participates in the implementation of the educational mission of the university, referred to in section 2, by preparing students for an active, informed and critical citizenship."

To follow this mission and spread the word, Daniel, the President of the Student Union's Executive Board and Nicolina, the President of the Student Council, grabbed our very own Rector Karen and went out to vote in the municipal elections. Mentorship is listening carefully and sharing experience // Att vara mentor innebär att lyssna noga och dela med sig

This 2020-2021 Hanken Vaasa mentor-mentee relationship is – if not a match made in heaven – then clearly one that is full of respect, warmth and learning. Mikael Still and Silas Magana hit it off from day one last September.

"Mikael allows me to open up, doesn’t brag about his successes and tells me frankly about his failures. He might say: “This I have never heard before, interesting, tell me more!” Then I tell him, feel valued and maybe even like I can teach him something. And I realize that we all have something to learn from each other. This gives me a feeling I can’t even explain – it’s like a Bruce Lee moment!" mentee Silas highlights.

Millennials and women make responsible investments

Millennials and women make responsible investments // Generation Y och kvinnor gör ansvarsfulla investeringar

On 11 May 2021, Hanken's research group presented the results of a survey carried out with Nordnet to map the responsibility of private investors in Finland 🍃.

"Sustainable investors seek good returns on their capital, but they also seek to include sustainability aspects in their investing activities by allocating their investments to investees that promote sustainability." Hanna Silvola, the study's leading researcher explains.

The results show that those who invest most responsibly are Millennials (<40 years), women, city dwellers, highly educated and Swedish speaking Finns. Those who, on the other hand, do not invest responsibly are older and investors with large portfolios. Despite the exceptional circumstances, the Havis A

Despite the exceptional circumstances, the Havis Amanda statue in the centre of Helsinki still gets its student cap to Walpurgis night. This year it is shsmoments 💙 that has the honour to do so. Rector Karen Spens and representatives from Hanken's student union provided Havis Amanda with both a cap and a face mask in a ceremony that was recorded for YLE 20.4.2021.

In Helsinki, Walpurgis night is celebrated remotely again due to the corona situation. Havis Amanda thus got her cap already in advance, and will be protected by a fence to avoid crowds around the statue during the weekend. The recording of the event can be seen at Yle Areena on Walpurgis Night at 17:45.

Giving Havis Amanda a student cap on Walpurgis Night is a student tradition dating back to the early 20th century. At first it was illegal, but from 1951 a public permit has been issued to provide the statue with a student cap. Originally, the ceremony took place at midnight and quickly became a popular event. Due to the late hour, however, there was also some disorder, so from 1978, the time was changed to 18.00.

Professor Kaj Storbacka is appointed Dean of Execu

Professor Kaj Storbacka is appointed Dean of Executive Education and Corporate Relations at Hanken School of Economics. In his task Storbacka will be responsible for corporate relations and fundraising.

– One of my most important tasks will be to ensure Hanken remains relevant and important for businesses. The government model for funding universities is not optimal from this point of view as it does not encourage co-operation with companies. Therefore, it is not enough to fulfil the requirements that the Ministry of Education and Culture defines. I want us to work harder and make sure Hanken participates in developing solutions to the increasingly complex challenges businesses are facing, Storbacka says.

The Board of Hanken appointed Storbacka at its meeting on Tuesday. At the same meeting professor Maria Holmlund-Rytkönen was appointed Dean of Programmes and Quality Assurance. Professor David B. Grant’s appointment as Dean of Research and Societal Impact was extended. In addition to these three Deans, professor Sören Kock continues as Dean of Education and Rector’s Representative in Vaasa.

Hans Dalborg Award to Hanken Researcher Hanna Silv

Hans Dalborg Award to Hanken Researcher Hanna Silvola

Hanna Silvola, Associate Professor of Accounting at Hanken School of Economics, receives the Hans Dalborg Award 2021 as the first researcher in Finland. The prize, 210 000 SEK, is awarded for excellence in research in financial economics. It is awarded by the Swedish House of Finance.

Silvola’s research interests are in sustainable investing. She is very grateful for the recognition.

“Research on sustainability has traditionally been marginal in the field of financial economics. This is, however, something that is rapidly changing – today there are not enough experts in the field," Silvola says.

Silvola's book Vastuullisuudesta ylituottoa sijoituksiin with Tiina Landau was published in Finnish in 2019, and the international edition Sustainable Investing: Beating the Market with ESG will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in June 2021.

Silvola is an active speaker in media and also an executive educator. She has worked at Hanken since 2018.

“Hanken provides a unique research environment for research on sustainable investing. This is not self-evident in all universities," she highlights.

Hans Dalborg served as Chairman of the Board of Nordea in 2002–2011. The prize that carries his name has been awarded since 2015.

Kom och träffa Hankens partnerföretag Måndag 26.4. kl. 13-16! Som första års-studerande förväntas det att du deltar i partnerföretagsdagen men alla är varmt välkomna med.

Under eftermiddagen ordnas företagspresentationer där du kan lära dig mer om Hankens partnerföretag. Du får höra vilka karriäralternativ de har att erbjuda och även få svar på dina frågor gällande dina studie- och karriärval.

Under samma vecka (27-29.4.2021) har du möjlighet att med låg tröskel snacka karriär, nätverka och/eller få hjälp med din CV av företagsrepresentanter. Samtalen är individuella (15 min) och ordnas via Microsoft Teams. Du kan själv välja vilket företag du vill träffa. The admissions process is just that... a long process with a lot of people involved.

The path has taken us through a few bumps on the road, plenty of laughter, and a few tears, but at the end of the road we are met with days like this; a week when we get to send out e-mails stating that a group of you have been accepted to Hanken's master's degree programme in English, and when we get to welcome new PhD students to our community.

On behalf of the whole faculty and staff - congratulations! We cannot wait to meet you all in the autumn and for you all to proudly call yourself Hankeits. #hanken

En universitetsutbildning i ekonomi kan hjälpa dig på vägen till flera olika uppskattade yrken, i princip inom vilken bransch som helst. Dagens ekonomer kan arbeta inom exempelvis marknadsföring, ekonomiförvaltning, redovisning, finansiering, informationsteknologi, personaladministration eller utbildning. Men oroa dig inte, du behöver inte veta exakt vad du vill göra ännu - via vår antagning till ekonomi får du först testa på alla huvudämnen. Eller vet du redan att nationalekonomi är din grej? Då kan du söka in via direktantagningen till huvudämnet.

Sedan 1909 har Hanken utvecklats till en av Nordens främsta handelshögskolor och är numera också en viktig arena för toppforskning och ny kunskap.

Vid Hanken åker alla studenter utomlands under sina kandidatstudier och utlandsvistelsen är en inbyggd del av kandidatexamen. Studierna i ekonomi ger även mycket goda förutsättningar för att arbeta utomlands.

In the survey, you get to take a stance on five different statements on a scale of 1-5 where 1 = completely of a different opinion and 5 = completely of the same opinion.

The main application round to Hanken's Master's Degree programme in English is coming to an end, take the chance and apply today! 😍

What do I need in order to apply?
1. Bachelor's or Master's Degree from a recognised university or polytechnic (you can also be about to graduate!)
2. One of our approved language tests or Bachelor's/Master's degree or secondary education conducted in English language in: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.
3. At least 30 ECTS in subjects relevant for the programme specialisation/track
4. Applicants applying based on a degree obtained in an EU/EEA country: GPA Grade B (3.0 Finnish scale) or sufficient test score in GMAT/GRE.
Applicants applying based on a degree obtained in a country outside the EU/EEA: sufficient test score in GMAT/GRE (Exempted from this rule are only applicants who have conducted the degree based on which they are applying at one of Hanken’s partner universities for student exchange and whose GPA meet the GPA requirement of at least Grade B)

Experience can be more than just an internship or a job: volunteering is a great opportunity to engage with society, learn new skills, and build your CV. Did you know that at Hanken you can gain 5 credits from volunteering (bachelor's degree students course 9997, master's degree students course 38009)? Here is Darlene's story:

"Having been with 180 Degrees Consulting Helsinki, I realized that what I have got from my volunteer experience is not only personal development in terms of professional skills but also social impacts by helping out local NGOs. It is a win-win situation for me as an international student in Finland looking for opportunities to gain experiences from extra curriculum activities, and local NGOs seeking out to tackle their problems.

To be more specific, by working on a consulting project for local NGOs, I could utilize my study at school to help local NGOs overcome their challenges and reach their full potential solving the organizations’ problem. Some of the NGOs 180 Degrees Consulting Helsinki worked with are Finnish Refugee Council, Monaliiku, Fida, Physician for Social Responsibility and so on."

The application for our Master's Degree Programme in English is open right now and closes on January the 15th, our PhD application opens in just two weeks (16th December- 3rd February 2021), and spring and applications for the Swedish programmes is just around the corner.
